MD Anderson Doctor Allegedly Tried to Poison Boyfriend

A doctor who works at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accused of poisoning a fellow physician whom she dated earlier this year.

Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, 42, is charged with the aggravated assault of a family member.

Investigators say that Gonzalez-Angulo put ethylene glycol in Dr. George Blumenschein’s coffee while they were alone together.

Blumenschein said the suspect had prepared some coffee for him on Jan. 27. After sipping it, he told her that it tasted too sweet for his liking. She told him that she had used an artificial sweetener instead of sugar.

Within a matter of hours, the victim experienced symptoms such as slurred speech, poor balance and impaired muscle movement.

After 16 hours, Blumenschein was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure.

A test confirmed that Blumenschein had a lethal amount of ethylene glycol in his body. It was also learned that the substance tastes sweet, which is how the victim described the coffee that Gonzalez-Angulo brewed for him.
